“E”

The performance “E” (Divine Essence) is based on Vladimir Nabokov’s short story “The Word.”

The audience is immersed in the dream of a hero who has lost his essence and identity. Stripped bare—both in body and nerves—“inspired by dreamlike winds,” he finds himself in paradise. He tries to speak with the heavenly beings, to tell them that far, far away, among the divine stars, there is a land—my land—which lies in darkness, unconscious, in need of God’s help.

And then an angel whispers the word of salvation into his ear:
“For a moment, the angel embraced me with his mighty wings and said a single word.”

“E” is a prayer-performance. It reflects on pain and suffering and is a confession of love for the homeland.
